Glaucoma

The “silent killer” of vision is a disease caused by uncontrolled pressure inside the eye. The most common form of glaucoma gradually damages the optic nerve and, similar to other forms of nerve damage, there is no way to regenerate its function. In general, glaucoma therapy intends to decrease eye pressure and prevent further vision loss. At Surgical Eye Experts, we favor interventions that simplify the lives of our patients. Eye drops are an important treatment method, but not everyone needs to be on multiple bottles throughout the day!

Microincision glaucoma surgery (MIGS) has modernized our glaucoma treatment approach. Dr. Collett has been onboard this revolutionary movement and is skilled with instruments like iAccess and iStent infinite. These modern devices greatly decrease eye pressure to minimize the likelihood of worsening glaucoma.

Durysta implant

Managing glaucoma no longer needs to rely on daily eye drops. At Surgical Eye Experts, we offer Durysta, a safe and painless solution that provides sustained intraocular pressure (IOP) control. This tiny, biodegradable implant delivers medication directly into the eye, reducing IOP and eliminating the need for regular drops.

With effects that can last years, Durysta simplifies glaucoma management, offering a long-term, hassle-free alternative to traditional treatments. It’s an option for those seeking freedom from the burden of daily medication.

iStent surgery

For patients with more advanced glaucoma, iStent offers one of the most effective solutions in microincision glaucoma surgery (MIGS). This tiny device is designed to enhance the eye’s natural drainage system, reducing intraocular pressure and slowing the progression of glaucoma.

The iStent procedure is quick, minimally invasive, and easy to recover from. By creating a permanent pathway for fluid outflow, iStent provides lasting IOP control and can reduce or eliminate the need for daily glaucoma medications.

Glaucoma Treatment FAQ

What is MIGS and is it different from traditional glaucoma surgery?

MIGS (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery) uses micro-incisions and micro-devices to lower intraocular pressure, with lower risk than traditional trabeculectomy or tube shunt surgery. Learn more on our MIGS page.

Is glaucoma reversible?

Glaucoma damage to the optic nerve is not reversible. Treatment lowers intraocular pressure to slow or halt further damage. Glaucoma is a chronic condition that is managed, not cured.

Is iStent right for me?

iStent is most appropriate for patients with mild-to-moderate open-angle glaucoma, especially when combined with cataract surgery. Dr. Collett reviews your specific diagnosis, pressures, and disease severity to recommend.

How do I know if I'm a Durysta candidate?

Durysta is well-suited for patients with open-angle glaucoma who want to reduce or eliminate daily drop use. It provides approximately 4 months of pressure-lowering medication per implant.

How often should I be checked for glaucoma?

Patients with diagnosed glaucoma typically need check-ups every 3 to 6 months depending on disease severity and treatment response. Visual field and OCT testing is performed regularly.

Do I have to take drops forever?

Not necessarily. Depending on your response to treatment, Dr. Collett may recommend SLT laser, MIGS (iStent), or Durysta to reduce or eliminate reliance on daily drops.
